The Calvin Coolidge Visitor Center

Farmers Guide May 2022 by Farmers Guide - Issuu

The Calvin Coolidge Visitor Center was built by the State of Vermont in 1972 to commemorate the centennial of President Coolidge's birth. Designed in the architectural style of early stone structures in the region, the Visitor Center houses a museum, gift shop, and restrooms. The museum features an introductory exhibit on Calvin Coolidge's career and displays gifts presented to the President from around the world.

The Wilder Horse Barn

The Wilder Horse Barn, reconstructed in 2003, recreates the original barn from the 1870s that was torn down in the mid-20th century. The accurate reconstruction was made possible by extensive photographs taken in the 1920s. The post and beam "bank barn" displays a collection of horse-drawn vehicles on the main level and offers restrooms and a picnic area on the lower level.

The Wilder Barn

The Wilder Barn, built in 1875, was part of the Moor-Wilder Farm. This "bank barn" was designed for easy entry on two levels, with hay storage overhead, a dairy herd on the main floor, and a basement for other livestock and manure storage. The barn now showcases an extensive collection of agricultural equipment used on a typical hillside farm at the turn of the 20th century.

The Wilder House

How people-powered conservation is helping to revive the UK's ...

The Wilder House, originally a tavern built around 1830, was the childhood home of President Coolidge's mother, Victoria Josephine Moor. It was also where her marriage to John Coolidge took place in 1868. The house's exterior is painted in the distinctive mustard-gold and green color scheme from the 1920s, while the interior now serves as a restaurant, offering breakfast and lunch during the season.

The Coolidge Homestead

The Coolidge Homestead was the boyhood home of Calvin Coolidge. It was here that he received word of President Warren Harding's unexpected death while vacationing, and his father, Colonel John Coolidge, administered the presidential oath of office to him. The Homestead, furnished exactly as it was in 1923, provides insight into Coolidge's early life and regular chores. The adjacent gray farmhouse belonged to his grandparents.

The Plymouth Cheese Factory

The Plymouth Cheese Factory was built in 1890 and served as an outlet for milk produced on local farms. After closing in 1934, it was reopened by President Coolidge's son, John, in 1960. Today, Frog City Cheese leases the factory and produces the historic Plymouth Cheese. Visitors can observe cheese making, shop for various Vermont cheeses, and explore an exhibit on the history of cheesemaking in Vermont.

The One-Room Schoolhouse

The One-Room Schoolhouse, built around 1890, replaced the stone schoolhouse that Calvin Coolidge attended until his graduation in 1885. It is now used for school programs at the site.

The Plymouth Cemetery

The Plymouth Cemetery, established before 1800, is the final resting place of President Coolidge and seven generations of Coolidges. The simple granite headstone reflects Coolidge's desire to be "one of the people" after leaving the White House.
