The Revolutionary History of Mount Independence
During the historic summer of 1776, 12,000 soldiers constructed a colossal fortification at Mount Independence to protect against a potential British invasion from the north. The mere sight of the fortified Mount Independence and Ticonderoga proved to be a deterrent as the British forces ultimately retreated back to Canada in the fall, granting the Americans a crucial year to prepare for an invasion.
With the arrival of winter, many American troops returned home, leaving only 2,500 soldiers and staff. Unfortunately, the remaining forces suffered from illness, and a number of them even succumbed to the harsh winter conditions. As spring of 1777 arrived, new troops arrived to strengthen the garrison, but their numbers were insufficient to adequately defend the forts.
On July 5th, the American forces were forced to evacuate the site when General John Burgoyne's British forces overwhelmed the area. British and German troops occupied Mount Independence until November, when they razed and destroyed the site after learning of Burgoyne's surrender at Saratoga.
Exploring Mount Independence Today
Mount Independence offers several trails that traverse the well-preserved remnants of the Revolutionary War fortification. These trails take you through nearly three hundred acres of picturesque pastures and woodlands, providing breathtaking panoramic views of Lake Champlain and the surrounding countryside. Additionally, some of the trails are wheelchair accessible, ensuring that everyone can enjoy the natural beauty of the site.
In the Visitors Center Museum, visitors can learn about the daily life of soldiers stationed at Mount Independence and explore a collection of artifacts recovered during recent archaeological excavations. These exhibits offer a fascinating glimpse into the military history of the site and provide valuable insights into the challenges faced by the soldiers during that critical period of American history.
